INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR TATTOO ARTISTS AND ILLUSTRATORS FOUNDED
Musta Agency, the world’s first international agency for tattoo artists has been founded in Helsinki, Finland. During the first stages, the agency will represent 11 illustrators from countries such as Finland, Poland, Spain, France, Lithuania, Italy and England.
Musta Agency’s story began during a conversation between Ilari Musta, Elisabet Waris and Tuomas Valtanen who all worked at Krunikan Leima, a tattoo parlor in Helsinki. “We were discussing how cool it would be to expand the tattoo design business into band merchandise and to be able to do more illustration,” explains Musta. “Tuomas and Elisabet had already done this for a long time and I had just finished an illustration for a package design for Paulig, a large Finnish coffee company. Then came Corona. Appointments were being canceled and there was uncertainty regarding the business. We had to really think how to save the tattoo parlor.”
Musta has more than 10 years of experience in the publishing business (he’s currently working as the art director for Image Magazine) and eight in tattooing. He has been published in a number of international tattoo books, is internationally-awarded in tattooing and has been a judge in tattoo conventions in both Finland and abroad. Musta got in contact with his friend Todd Weinberger, who, as it turns out, had also thought of a similar idea for years — to provide representation for tattoo artists and connect them with brands.
Weinberger has more than 15 years experience in branding, advertising and publishing. As an award-winning creative director, he’s currently the design director at Revolver magazine and has an extensive background in the tattoo world as well. He previously served as the creative director of Inked, where he was responsible for redesigning and relaunching its namesake magazine and also was a judge on Spike TV’s Ink Master and appeared in TLC’s LA Ink and New York Ink.
The group was also joined by sales director and customer service specialist Sanni Levosaari. Having spent 12 years working with biggest hospitality brands in Finland including Sokos Hotels and Radisson Blu, she’s also been developing two start-up companies within the tattoo industry.
With the team in place, Musta Agency will take the tattoo-style illustration of the artists they represent and connect them to professional brands for commissioned illustration work. The possibilities are endless — from automotive, beauty, spirits, merchandise, home goods, packaging for coffee and so much more.
“Musta Agency elevates tattoo artists from the skin and helps introduce them to art directors at creative agencies. The range of tattoo styles is extensive and it is possible to harness them for a much wider range of uses than how they are being utilized at the moment.”
After Finland, Musta Agency plans to expand into the Baltics, Poland, Scandinavia and Germany.
